He claims the developers are hostile to negative feedback, but for anyone who follows the issue trackers they’re actually quite open to feature requests. Some get tasked with milestone goals, some for final release, but it’s based on available resources and reasonable timelines.
He also claims Gnome implements things people ask for, which is one of the most hilariously inaccurate statements I have ever seen in my entire life.
From one of the comments in this video, my personal favorite is “wake up babe, new vaxry drama dropped”. If he read the issue trackers on github, he would see just how aware the devs are of what they need to work on. It’s actually been pretty awesome to see the prioritization of work and estimated timelines.
Gnome implements things people ask for
I still use GNOME but with an extension to prevent the behaviour mentioned above. The discussion in that thread was pretty wild.
I’m only 10 posts in and my head is already spinning. How do open-source development teams run like this?
Must be difficult since they don’t have telemetry to work with.
I read the actual post, and it’s just dripping with salt and jealousy.
I don’t really care about his opinion opinion, but maybe nazis will listen.
He feels threatened by the work of the COSMIC DE as this DE will basically offer a smoother end user experience without the caveats of other DEs. Once it is out of it’s Alpha to Stable development cycle, of course. COSMIC will be at a big advantage of not having any legacy code holding it back, and will purposefully avoid a lot of the annoyances of current DEs on the scene. I’ll let the System 76 team cook before passing any solid judgements on COSMIC. There are a few years yet before COSMIC becomes something amazing (I’m just guessing, take this with a grain of salt).
His critics are actually terrible. The way he criticizes makes him look like a jerk and he doesn’t give any constructive feedback. I mean, if the COSMIC team was not doing anything to improve the product and just riding with the positive wave of reviews, I could almost agree with him, but that’s not what’s happening at all. WTF is he going on about? Did something happen that we don’t know about?
My only problem with cosmic and system76 is that they are profit motivated companies. Really don’t wanna get bit in the ass later when they start full monitization
You should stop using Linux then. The Linux kernel, along with many open source software, is developed and sponsored by for-profit organizations. Either directly or indirectly. Without them, open source wouldn’t be able to thrive.
