Signal is centralised and most certainly NOT part of the fediverse
this meme is sending the wrong signal
Yeah, this is more about getting away from the centralised / commercial / corporate / commodified / compromised / etc -verse.
What do we call that side of social media anyway?
It would be nice to have a term to sum it all up. Because for a lot of people it’s just the water they’re in - they don’t think about it, because it’s default/mainstream. They don’t even consider that they have a choice.
Kind of like, but not really, how the term cis makes people confront that they have a label, even if they don’t think about it.
What is suggested alternative?
probably matrix. it’s decentralised, but not with the same protocol as the other things in the list. which makes sense, instant messaging is not social media.
My friends and family use Briar. It is without a question the most secure, most private option.
briar is great, but i don’t think any of these services are really recommended for their privacy. rather, it’s ease of switching. doesn’t briar require in-person verification?
You can add at a distance. You can also “introduce” two contacts to each other. There’s also forums and groups you can create or join.
Signal is not federated. Matrix or xmpp is the federated chat
Can I get any of these to bubble?
Pixelfed and Loops aren’t ready for migration. Account creation is still disabled and requires several messages to work around the beta splash page.
Loops, huh? I’ll check that out.
Oh wait.
“We’re not accepting new users at this time.”
It’s still in early stages of development.
It seems like they open up registrations in waves while it’s still in development. Signups were open just a couple weeks ago, so I imagine they’ll probably turn them back on again soon.
Loops.Video is ‘not accepting new users at this time’
Can you talk to your Facebook friends on Signal?
