Baldurās Gate 3 is an incredible role-playing game experience, a gift for RPG fans and a wonderful introduction to the genre for newcomers. Itās got everything a good RPG needs: memorable characters, exciting, strategic battles, and a textured world to get lost in as your party goes questing across the map. Itās a showcase for just how good RPGs are when they really connect, and fortunately for us, thereās plenty more where that came from.
So, in the event that Baldurās Gate 3 has inspired you to explore the genre further, hereās a list of games that similarly nail the RPG experience in ways that will leave you itching to get back to the character youāve created ā provided, of course, you didnāt immediately roll a new one to take into Baldurās Gate 3 all over again.
About the level of writing Iāve come to expect from a listicle, but I take particular issue with the fact that they list Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2 as separate items but clump the three Dragon Age games together into one, when the Dragon Age games have much more variation between each game than the POE games do.
Yeah that blanket rec for Dragon Age is kind of not great, especially since I donāt think 2 in particular is very similar to BG.
I havenāt played 3, but yeah Iād agree with that. DA:O is basically the source of the formula used to make BG3
How can one talk about Disco Elysium without mentioning the writing even once
No mention of Pathfinder? I was playing Wrath of the Righteous right before BG3 and it makes BG3 seem so tiny(mechanics wise) in comparison.
I was disappointed by the lack of Pathfinder. To the point where I think this author isnāt credible.
BG3 is a much prettier game. And by a lot.
But the Pathfinder games are a more immersive adventure.
If not for Planescape being on there I would have assumed they meant only more recent games. No Jade Empire. No KOTOR. Not even Neverwinter Nights or Fallout 1 & 2 or Icewind Dale. Let alone all the classic SSI Goldbox games or even Bardās Tale (the original from the 80ās not that shit on Xbox).
Disappointed not to see Jade Empire on the list. Some of the best party interactions ever
Best ending dialogue to a video game ever.
āItās time to punch a mountainā¦ Into space!ā
They mentioned Divinity: Original Sin 2 which is no surprise. I couldnāt be bothered to finish Act 2. Itās unforgiving, takes a very long time and becomes a bit stale after a while. I know it wasnāt that way for most players. But I fear Iād have the same sentiment with Baldurās Gate 3.
