  • Actually the most widely used OS worldwide is Android. Nearly ½ of all devices are Android while only ¼ of all devices are Windows.

Now if you want to adjust the scope and only look at “desktop” operating systems then yes, that is the majority. However over the past 10 years Windows has declined by ~15%, the majority going to macOS, but a small percentage going to Linux. Linux is generally on the rise, albeit slowly.

Also keep in mind the data I’ve referenced above applies to ALL devices. The landscape changes dramatically when you look at console vs “PC” gaming. Console gaming is roughly ~60% of the traditional gaming market. So while a Windows user may not become a Linux user, they may disappear and become a console user, decreasing the number of Windows users.

While I fully expect Windows to be around for a while, unless a change is made it will continue to lose market share. It would be a mistake to look at these numbers and think Windows is safe and beloved. By all metrics Windows is going away. It’s not going to happen overnight, but 10 years from now?

  • I agree it was expected but it’s important that it happened.

I’ve always assumed Meta’s investment in Threads’s ActivityPub compatibility was purely to show the EU, “Hey look, we’re trying to follow the open standard.”

For that reason I’ve believed that giving Meta a VERY short leash was reasonable. While I believed them to be full of shit, I think extending an olive branch and allowing them to be part of the Fediverse at large was a worthwhile effort.

They have however put almost no effort into being a good part of the Fediverse. They’ve implemented minor features and sharing, just enough to say " technically we’re working on it."

Now we can see them directly blocking. Now maybe in a few days they’ll say “whoopsie”, but I think this clearly shows they truly have no interest or intention of being part of the Fediverse.

I’m not surprised by this. I fully expected this. But I was willing to give them a chance. Maybe they didn’t deserve that chance. I think they’ve certainly forfeited it now.

  • To be fair I think she uses and is referred to as Carol during the entire film. In the sequel two characters use the name “Marvel”, one “Ms” and one “Captain”.

Of course it’s still surprising that you could watch a whole film and not be clear. In the first film there a very clear main character, and you know what film you’re watching, so that’s simple enough. In the second film one of the main characters fangirls over the character named “Captain Marvel”, so that’s straightforward.

  • The Pentaverate is solid. It’s no Austin Powers or Wayne’s World, but it’s solid. It was great to see Mike Meyers back in form, even if it wasn’t his best work, just really good.

My hope is that he was just out of practice and he’s working on some great stuff behind the scenes. I know The Love Guru was a big miss for him and it really cut him down. He thought he’d created the next Austin Powers and it just fell flat. It wasn’t the worst film, but definitely a huge step down.

Long way if saying if you’re a Mike Meyers can, the Pentaverate is probably worth your time.

  • Because it’s bad if China has the information. It’s fine if “US entity” had the information. The ban is ultimately fake. No one banning the app cares about TikTok, they just hate that China is getting the information they want. What will happen is some US based company, Oracle last time, but someone like that will buy a sufficient enough stake in the company and the ban will not happen. It will be declared “safe” and the data will go to a US controlled entity, but also still secretly to China. (The later will be revealed years later, to the shock of no one.)

  • As mentioned, about:config, allows you to configure all settings. It provides a minimal UI.

A subset of these settings are also available in the standard settings menu.

Realistically the settings menu can’t contain EVERY setting, at least not giving the current UI. The UI as designed is meant to support the most common options.

Your complaint is that the options you found should be part of the common options.

Mozilla collects telemetry data. So presumably their data doesn’t show them that those settings are so popular that they need to be in the settings menu.

Now that doesn’t mean their data is perfect. Or maybe they’re missing a specific use case. In which case filing a big might be the best option.
