Maybe OT, but there’s comfort knowing most online accounts minimizing irl resistance (saying this is nothing, or not enough, or they’re not doing it right, or I can do 6-7pm on Wednesday lmk, omg people have jobs, why aren’t they angry at this other thing, and on and on) are working overtime.
Remember learning about the work that went into de-legitimizing the Women’s Marches?
More than 4,000 miles away, organizations linked to the Russian government had assigned teams to the Women’s March. At desks in bland offices in St. Petersburg, using models derived from advertising and public relations, copywriters were testing out social media messages critical of the Women’s March movement, adopting the personas of fictional Americans.
They posted as Black women critical of white feminism, conservative women who felt excluded, and men who mocked participants as hairy-legged whiners. - NYT, Sept 22
The day after the World Said No to War, news article after article sold the story back to us that we didn’t really DO anything because the USA was still bombing people. But everyone who was there remembers looking around and realizing no matter what the news tells us about our activism, we still care enough to show up for each other, and We Are Everywhere. With oppositional media framing everything as hopeless, depressing, alienating, etc, physically being with other people who give a fuck is not just good for politics, it’s good for our mental health (or soul, if you’re into that).
StopTouchingYourPhone@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft employee disrupts 50th anniversary and calls AI boss ‘war profiteer’English30·18 days agoReading some comments here, I want to leave a gentle reminder to my fellow redditfugees: the block user option is your friend. Curate your feed or get fed.
When you see an aggressively oppositional account dropping shittastic hot takes, of course you can always engage and Have The Conversation if you want. You know what happens after you reply: the person likely leaves a bot to mess with your good intentions, raise your blood pressure, make you depressed and waste your time. Or maybe you successfully Prove Them Wrong and they change the goalposts, or wander off to needle someone else.
We know by now, the more we engage, the more online space they get to fill with accelerationist Content.
So just click the account name, then click the block button, and you’ll never see their viral brainrot again. Nobody needs to know; no need to announce it. If your freezepeach philosophy prevents that, maybe just upvote one of the replies you agree with and move on. If you’re on mobile, you can tag the account through Voyager etc instead of blocking, if you prefer.
However you manage it, removing doomscroller ragebait from your Feed is worth doing.
I think trading your trombone lessons for puppet making is cool. I traded a giant turnip and a jar of pickled beets for some of my neighbour’s candied ginger last week.
Since you asked for ideas about organizing and what your fabulous ‘microscopic beans’ group might get up to:
Maybe talk to your community of regulars about being willing to mobilize in some way. Like, who wants basic disaster training. Maybe one of you knows first aid and can teach the rest. Those community meals you have could turn into bringing food to war refugees or families of stolen migrant workers out every Monday morning at the embassy (or wherever they protest regularly in your area). You can make one of your meetings about media literacy, and spotting propaganda, or if you’re all already savvy, you could create a fabulous Introduction to Propaganda Techniques performance and bring it to a mall or public square.
Poster/sticker campaigns telling people which media are Feeding them nazi shit are really helpful atm. No idea what your jam session might make out of an action like that, but artists jailbreak people’s programming in nifty ways no one expects. You could have everyone learn Jesse Welles’ War Isn’t Murder song and flash mob it somewhere.
Also, and this is where I know NOTHING about you, so apologies if it’s too personal or presumptuous.
I remember the G20 up here in Toronto really well. I remember them putting up those barricades all over downtown, telling locals not to go outside in our own neighbourhoods, them rounding up people the nights before protests, getting kettled and on. That shit is absolutely traumatizing, and you’re right: all bets are off when it comes to safety at protests where you are. Your safety is solely in the hands of the protester next to you, as theirs is in yours, just like always. My advice is to ask your group if anyone else feels traumatized by past protests in a similar way. Maybe the number is higher than you think. Maybe they want to talk about like, feelings and stuff. Maybe you can make something out of that (tactics, actions), or maybe it’s just a conversation. Either way, win-win.

In theatre it’s called “suspension of disbelief.” You know what’s happening on stage isn’t really happening, but you agree to just go with it and exist in the show’s reality for an hour or so. Not meant to be a permanent state of consciousness.

I’d prefer a ban.
Even though the Proud crowd are big operators in Canada, banning Yankee social media would maybe help lower the ragebait volume a bit. Whatever makes a dent.

StopTouchingYourPhone@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Those who live outside of the US, what's something Americans aren't ready to hear?6·4 months agoYou made me think of my buddy from the states visiting me in Toronto 2010-ish laughing at the Canadian flags they sometimes saw flying from people’s houses and other buildings. I asked her what struck her so funny about them and she blanked for a second. She said, “It’s just weird seeing so many flags that aren’t American… Like, this is a country too… um.” We had a brilliant talk about flag-waving patriots for a bit, but seeing that glitch was really interesting and I’ve never forgotten it.
That said, I had plenty of teachers growing up and know tonnes of educators now who’d totally be into forcing students to salute the Canadian flag and pledge allegiance to their God & Country every morning. The only thing stopping them is legislation preventing it, not national identity.
StopTouchingYourPhone@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Those who live outside of the US, what's something Americans aren't ready to hear?61·4 months agoTo expand on this.
Canadians are Americans. Mexicans are Americans. Peruvians are Americans. Yankees (or USofAvians) are Americans too. They’re just the only country with a self-appellation claiming to represent two whole continents worth of people (when most of them probably can’t name all the countries in America without a quick gander at google maps).

The answers you got here were really helpful for me to understand a bit more about the context/history of these spaces.
Love it. Anyone designing public transit in any capacity has to use it to the exclusion of all else for half a year, and they must travel the longest distance within the system at least twice a week.

Another anecdote to add (may as well leave it with your daughter’s). Since Wednesday I’ve been catcalled 4 times, just out getting groceries, doing errands. I’m a woman in my late 40s in Canada who hasn’t been catcalled in that specifically threatening nasty way since my early 30s. And it’s ALL been from rabid-looking white guys. They’ve obviously been given a very clear go-ahead with Trump’s win.
Religious Fundamentalist women have a tougher mental barrier to get through than most. For the Christian fundies I grew up with, women 1] are literally created FOR men (1 Corinthians 11:9), 2] have been deemed by God as incapable of governing themselves, so they must be ruled by their husbands (Genesis 3:16), and 3] must vow to Obey their husbands as they would God Himself.
Like Jovial’s story about the miscarriage. The bible decrees that if women have trouble with a pregnancy, it’s because they’re not trusting and faithful enough (1 Timothy 2:15), so if she is a fundie, she likely thinks her lifesaving abortion was a result her failure to believe enough. Her God literally says that if she had died back then, then she brought it on herself. It’s all inculcated woman-hating victim-blaming Family Values rot.

When they lose their “imperfect messenger from God” they’ll just follow who their pastors tell them to follow. Maybe they’ll change the name to the Trump Party and any nazi Christian soldier can lead it. Bible-banger Vance is lined up as the successor atm, but who knows? Could be Desantis. Could be Bannon. Anyone tapped who’s willing to act out that vindictive certainty, solidarity and ferocity that Trump performs so well can do the job for them.
Maybe one of his kids. If the fundie leaders want to be truly perverse (and we know they do), they’ll choose Ivanka and call it feminism.

The only reason we know this is happening, is because Lyft fucked up once by sending her the transcript. Assume it’s happening in every vehicle.
The personal responsibility/choice narrative silicon valley loves so much when it comes to deregulation of labour standards and constant aggressive privacy violations is not useful irl. Any gig worker for lyft/uber/fuckworkers.com isn’t going to feel free to say no (if they have any choice at all) and putting the onus on riders doesn’t make sense here at all.
Canada has privacy laws that techbro companies from the USA simply ignore. Now is the best time to start enforcing them.
