I’m surprisingly level-headed for being a walking knot of anxiety.
Ask me anything.

Admiral Patrick@dubvee.orgto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is it about residential solar energy that attracts so many scams and fly-by-night operators?English2·8 days agoProbably the same reason the quack science “free energy” videos on YouTube get so many views.
But also, it’s likely an evolution of the roofer scams from ye olden days.

I knew it was a “when” and not and “if” it would start having issues, and it finally showed its colors last month.
Front panel buttons either refused to work at all or would cycle through every option continuously and randomly.
Want water? Sorry, only crushed ice today. Want ice? Sorry, just water today. Oh, I actually did want water (starts dispensing). PSYCH! Now I’m going to shoot ice at you and splash water everywhere.
Was about to just toss the thing and get something dumber and more reliable, but decided to roll the dice with a replacement control board from ebay. Thankfully, that worked and I’m only out $80.

Admiral Patrick@dubvee.orgto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why did we stop using Firefox?English4·15 days agoI never fully did, but I did end up using Chromium more than I wanted to:
- Some poorly written sites refuse to work with FF. My water company, for example. They eventually fixed it after I complained multiple times. Now they display a warning that it’s “Optimized for Chrome” but no longer flat out prevent FF from logging in (you know, to pay bills and such).
- FF Desktop still doesn’t support PWAs, and their recent update says they’re working on it, but they’re half-assing it (installed web apps will still have the menu bars, address, bar etc). I self-host a lot of web applications and want them to appear like native apps. Hence, Chromium.
- There was some recent ToS / Privacy Policy change, and everyone was knee-jerking “time to abandon Firefox” as if there’s anywhere better to go. (This is probably what you’re thinking of)
- A good while back, Chrom(ium) was just flat-out faster. That’s been a while, and I think when FF’s “Quantum” update (or whatever it was called) came out in like 2016 or 2017, it put it back on par.

I would make fried rice more often.English1·16 days agoGives me an idea for a pizza shop: All the pizza was made yesterday, and it’s served cold straight out of the fridge.
Not saying that cold pizza is better than fresh, hot pizza. Just good in a different way.
Admiral Patrick@dubvee.orgto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are the moderators of lemmy too eager to delete threads and comments?English1·16 days agoI don’t see any threads recently nuked in News, and no recent modlog entries for you specifically (except an old one from 6 months ago where you called someone a pedo, and nope, I’m not digging up a slapfight thread that starts/ends there). You might also want to clarify which “news” community; I was only looking at the modlog within the last hour as described in the post here.
The post I think you’re talking about, “Cocaine ‘no worse than whiskey,’ would be ‘sold like wine’ if legalized worldwide, Colombia’s president says” was removed because it was old news (rule 5: Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days). That’s a long-established community rule, and it was properly enforced.
The only comment I see removed in c/News in the last hour isn’t from that post or by you, and was removed for “What the fuck?”. Considering the comment in question is:
NSFL
She was enjoying the dead babies a bit too much
…I think the mod made the right call.
Edit: Put quoted removed comment into spoiler tag with NSFL warning.

Admiral Patrick@dubvee.orgto Technology@beehaw.org•Slate Truck is a $20,000 American-made electric pickup with no paint, no stereo, and no touchscreenEnglish6·20 days agoThat’s what I thought (re: backup cameras), and someone else mentioned the gauge cluster is a digital screen which switches to the backup camera view). In my case, 150 miles (round trip ) would be just around the upper edge of my use cases, though 15-20 would be more average.
which these days are basically a full size truck of yester-yore
Makes me miss my old 2003 Ranger. It was right where I needed a truck to be, size-wise.
Admiral Patrick@dubvee.orgto Technology@beehaw.org•Slate Truck is a $20,000 American-made electric pickup with no paint, no stereo, and no touchscreenEnglish9·20 days agoWould definitely buy one of these. I miss having a truck, but I only need one occasionally for the occasional need to haul something that won’t fit in my car (e.g. Lowe’s trips). I also really dislike the “smartphone on wheels” aspect of pretty much all current EVs.
Plus, I hate the infotainment systems so I would be happy to roll my own.
Though I do wonder if it has a backup camera/screen. Aren’t those required nowadays?
Admiral Patrick@dubvee.orgto Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•Spider-killing sprays also kill flies, but fly-killing sprays don't kill spiders.English0·21 days agoYeah. Forget where I heard this, but it was something like “For every spider you see in your basement, that’s like 1000 other bugs you won’t”.
Unless it’s an infestation, I tend to leave individual spiders alone.
Admiral Patrick@dubvee.orgto Technology@beehaw.org•Bluesky rolls out blue check verificationsEnglish15·23 days agoI don’t see what people’s problem with this is. It’s not like it’s anyone can just buy a blue check (unlike X). It’s just confirming that the account belongs to who it claims to be (like old Twitter verified users). I don’t know if that requires any payment, but it’s definitely not “Here’s $5 – okay, here’s your blue check”.
- During this initial phase, Bluesky is not accepting direct applications for verification," the company said.
- “As this feature stabilizes, we’ll launch a request form for notable and authentic accounts interested in becoming verified or becoming trusted verifiers.”
If I remember correctly, that’s pretty much exactly how old Twitter rolled out its original user verification.
From a de-centralized perspective, I’m not sure how that would work. I guess each instance would be in charge of verification and setting the “verified” flag for the account? The alternative would be some kind of central authority. Granted, I know little of Bluesky (microblogging is not my cup of tea), so I may be way off on my guesses there.

That’s literally what we did, lol, and advanced math. Plus, I think we got to go on several field trips each year. Those were nice.
But yeah, I came to the same conclusion far too late in life.
