Anyone know what happened with Raccoon for lemmy? I use Obsidian to download and update the app from Github but now it tells me there’s an error when I try to update it. I tried checking the Github page and I get an error there saying the website doesn’t exist.
Apparently it got taken down arbitrarily by dev’s choice. Someone may have a fork but no telling if anyone plans to take up the mantle and continue.
Oh well, I like eternity the best anyway and it looks like it’s getting updated soon or maybe has already
This fork is the new official one. A new community has been created recently to replace the old one too.
The dev took it down, I’m not going to go into his reasons to do so, but you can find a fork here.
do you know if anyone has set up a release of this new fork now that the original is down?
We are planning to release a new version, at least on GitHub asap. The announcement is likely to be given in tomorrow’s Q&A session (the monthly AMA).
Great to hear!
I have no idea, I guess we have to wait for an initial release.
Good to know that at least the code is out there. I feel bad for the developer though, he was nice and dedicated.
It was taken down by the developer after a sh*tstorm originated in this community which was damaging his reputation as a professional, since his real name was associated with the repository.
which was damaging his reputation as a professional
Damn, that sucks. Did the dev state that explicitly, or is that just speculation?
Links to discussions for reference in case others are curious:
From his explanation before removing everything:
I find myself in a very uncomfortable situation right now because, after revealing my personal information as the project owner, the current circumstances create a real damage to my public image as a professional and as a person. My coworkers, my managers, my employers (current and future) can see all of this and my personal reputation is compromised.
That’s too bad. I didn’t think that post was intended to damage any of the devs reputation, just to provide some useful feedback and critiques on what were already great apps.
It has also been forked and looks like there is active development here.
