I love new music, but I don’t follow links to music unless I know I’ll like the genre. For anyone that migrated, r/listentothis is my prime example (I don’t know if they ever came back online, so I’m unsure if anyone can go back to reference)

Example - title, artist [genre]

Wolves of the Revolution, The Arcadian Wild [folk][bluegrass]

I would not be in favor of this personally. The thing is, a lot of music doesn’t fall into a cookie-cutter genre. I wouldn’t like the idea of people restraining from posting because they don’t know how to classify a piece. Now if it was more of a suggestion I think that would be fine.

I’m really uncomfortable with requiring this kind of thing, because it’s a slippery slope towards making it damn hard to post stuff.

I grew to hate /r/listentothis and /r/music because every time I tried to post something, it would get removed by the auto mod for any one of a number of spurious reasons. It’s nice that anyone can post links to the music that’s making them vibe on here, and if it doesn’t speak to anyone else, then it’ll drop out of sight soon enough. I understand why those subs had such stringent rules, but at this moment in time, this community isn’t busy enough to justify it.

Think a guideline which encourages this might work better. Otherwise probably wise to avoid going as far as making it a bald requirement, but allowing imprecise indications i.e “[if you like X piece/artist/genre you might like this]” or even something as vague as a description of the vibe.

A lot of people know little to nothing about genres, and there is plenty of music whose genre is hotly debated.

Any rule adds a burden to the mod team. It can be made easier with auto-mod software, but we should make it clear we’re asking for more labor from volunteers.

That being said, I’d love a rule to prevent directly linking to youtube, and using invidious or piped instead. I’ll mod if it helps to enforce the rule.

i’d like for this too. i know a lot of people in general have pretty eclectic music tastes, but i only really like a couple genres, and would rather just be able to only listen to new music from those genres if possible
