apparently I didn’t ask the correct question with my last post: I’m looking for a foss messenger I can also send audio and video with and have a conversation over the smartphone not needing to use voip (and not needing a phone number).

None of them are tied to your phone number if that’s what you mean by non voip.

Signal recently added usernames. I’m not sure if you still need a phone number to sign up, though.
You still need to have a phone number, usernames exist so you van chat over signal without sharing your phone number.
Jami? Also Nextcloud Talk though my results with that haven’t been great. I’ve been wanting to try Jami.
