Basic Glitch@lemm.eeOPto Technology@lemmy.world•White House Says It Has Tech That Can 'Manipulate Time and Space'English1·28 days agoI mean, if we are to go by Kratsios’ speech, it would appear they are just the first brave and innovative enough to take advantage of technology already existing but intentionally weighed down by regulations. This timeline being a result of their brave innovation makes a lot of sense.
Basic Glitch@lemm.eeOPto Technology@lemmy.world•White House Says It Has Tech That Can 'Manipulate Time and Space'English4·28 days agoMaybe in your house, but in the White House, I’m not so sure. Mr. Kratsios holds a political science degree (with a focus on Hellenic studies) and appears to have no hard science qualifications.
Basic Glitch@lemm.eeOPto Technology@lemmy.world•White House Says It Has Tech That Can 'Manipulate Time and Space'English3·28 days agoNo joke, he was actually Trump’s acting director of OSTP during his first administration. During that time, people were critical of him because he lacked any qualifying experience in science.
Democratic members of the House actually wrote a letter begging Trump to pick a real science advisor to avoid a potential disaster. Trump eventually picked a meteorologist as his official science advisor several months later. If not for Anthony Fauci’s meddling, those two would have been solely responsible for handling the COVID pandemic under Trump.
Basic Glitch@lemm.eeOPto Technology@lemmy.world•White House Says It Has Tech That Can 'Manipulate Time and Space'English3·28 days agoJust to be clear, the point is that Kratsios seemed to be making a sciencebro sales pitch about U.S. innovation under Trump, but given how delusional and unethical this administration has already been when it comes to making a name for U.S. tech supremacy, people took it seriously.
Wasn’t expecting such a weirdly strong reaction to pointing this out, but yikes.
Basic Glitch@lemm.eeOPto Technology@lemmy.world•White House Says It Has Tech That Can 'Manipulate Time and Space'English1·28 days agoYou just gave me a mental image of the dumbest BTFII reboot
Basic Glitch@lemm.eeOPto Technology@lemmy.world•White House Says It Has Tech That Can 'Manipulate Time and Space'English15·28 days agoNope. But given our elite technologist leaders often have some dangerous ideas about innovation and “improvements to society,” that don’t quite align with reality, I can’t say I blame people for worrying they might actually try.

Yes, that CVE programEnglish2·28 days agoI’m just wondering how Trump squares an explanation for this with the fact that we’re in a technology war with China. Why would we make ourselves more vulnerable to them?
I guess to clarify, it seems easier for Trump to make the argument to his base that everything he does to make us more vulnerable to Russia shouldn’t really be a big deal bc he has so much respect and trust for Putin.
Most people (myself included) don’t really know about this program, but if cutting funding makes us more vulnerable to China and other bad actors, it seems like a point more Americans should be made aware of.
Basic Glitch@lemm.eeto Technology@lemmy.world•Uncle Sam abruptly turns off funding for CVE program. Yes, that CVE programEnglish16·29 days agoThey’re doing so much of this shit quietly, but when you start to put each piece together it should be frightening to anyone that doesn’t believe Russia is our BFF.
In late Feb, just after the whole Zelenskyy White House visit, Hegseth issued an order to Cyber Command to halt all planning against Russia including cybersecurity offensive strategies.
He gave the order to Commander Timothy Haugh, who is also head of the National Security Agency. Haugh told the outgoing director of operations, and cyber command begun putting together an official document of why this is a very bad idea.
I missed this completely until yesterday, but it turns out that Haugh and his NSA deputy were both suddenly ousted from their positions less than 2 weeks ago.
No reason was given they were just told “your services are no longer required.” Apparently Laura Loomer requested Trump have them removed and made some vague accusations against them bc they had been installed under Biden.
I admit I hadn’t heard of CVE program before today. Since we are BFFs now and Russia is “totally not a threat” to the U.S., I guess it’s supposed to be ok because friends share everything. But wouldn’t this also make us incredibly more vulnerable to China and any other country?
Basic Glitch@lemm.eeto PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Young men are 'playing videogames all day' instead of getting jobs because they can mooch off of free healthcare, claims congressmanEnglish2·29 days agoI mean maybe you do, but not being able to afford healthcare doesn’t automatically mean you’re just choosing to play video games all day. I know a guy who’s in his second year of med school, does community health volunteering in his free time, and is on Medicaid with the intention of helping others on Medicaid when he finishes.
There’s tons of children dependent on Medicaid, pregnant women, people with disabilities, people who work full time but still fall below the poverty line. There are so many different people that depend on Medicaid for different reasons. That’s why cutting it to give wealthy people a tax cut is a disgusting thing to do.

These bros are so goddamn stupid, and I wouldn’t even care except they’re going to kill us all in their delusional dumbass pursuit of a technocratic AI powered utopia.
And they’re all so fucking miserable even if they succeed they will just wind up all alone in their robotic powered biodomes wondering wtf the point of existence is bc nobody is left to stroke their dumb fucking egos.
Basic Glitch@lemm.eeto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How likely is it that Trump will be the first President assassinated since Kennedy?English8·1 month agoI’ll be honest, seeing this sudden shift to openness talking about this when knowing how controlled the narrative is even here, makes me think this might actually be part of the narrative they’re now trying to push.
I could definitely be wrong about that, but I’ve seen this brought up here a few times and even last night there was an AskReddit about what Americans would feel is the final straw to have Trump removed from power.
I actually was talking about this in a post a few days ago. If Vance suddenly succeeded Trump as president, it would not fix anything, and it would likely make things much worse

The same day the emergency order was signed by the governor, he announced he was restructuring GOHSEP (governors office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness) under the National guard as part of his state DOGE plan to cut waste and save money.
The emergency order grants the director of GOHSEP authority to act however they seem fit to handle cybersecurity. But on the same day the director of GOHSEP was given a new title, and is no longer director.
The “acting director” is now Louisiana National Guard Brig. Gen. Jason P. Mahfouz
Basic Glitch@lemm.eeOPto Technology@lemmy.world•Louisiana Governor's Cybersecurity State of Emergency Renewal, grants the National Guard authority to undertake any activity authorized by law deemed appropriate in responseEnglish2·2 months agoHere is a summary of everything: https://lemm.ee/post/59671562
But tldr for even that: One day last week the governor just declared he was suddenly moving the entire office that handles state emergencies (Governor’s office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness-GOHSEP) under the control of the state’s national guard.
On the same day he also suddenly announced he was Renewing a previous state of emergency that was created by the previous governor to address a cyber attack.
For some unknown reason that nobody has addressed, he added a new section to the renewed executive order that essentially says the director of GOHSEP has authority to do whatever he deems necessary to handle cybersecurity.
Except when he moved GOHSEP to be controlled by the National Guard, he also removed the director of the office and gave him a new title. So there is no actual director.
A member of the National Guard is acting director, so it would appear that the governor basically handed very broad control of cybersecurity to the national guard in a very underhandeded way hoping nobody would notice
Basic Glitch@lemm.eeOPto Technology@lemmy.world•Louisiana Governor's Cybersecurity State of Emergency Renewal, grants the National Guard authority to undertake any activity authorized by law deemed appropriate in responseEnglish21·2 months agoSo I updated some stuff and yeah this seems very strange. The original order was in 2019 after an attack on some government servers. I had somehow forgotten that in 2023, the government admitted that there had been an ongoing cybersecurity attack on Louisiana OMV data and that essentially every adult in the state had their data breached (it’s been a bit of a hectic year).

Basic Glitch@lemm.eeto Reddit@lemmy.world•Is anyone else noticing an uptick in far-right content and Russian propaganda on reddit lately?English5·2 months agoIt’s every major platform. Even Substack is just so ridiculous at this point. Idk if it’s even necessarily Russians, but just the ability of wealthy people to buy algorithm control and push an agenda.
I tried to use Substack for a min but just kept getting frustrated with the inability to sort feed content of any accounts unless you follow them already. Like something would happen and I would want to discuss it with a large group of people and learn information while it’s still relevant, but there’s no way to do that.
For some reason I kept seeing the same messaging over and over pushed on my feed trying to convince me that Pete Buttigeg is somehow the same as AOC or Bernie Sanders (which logic should tell you wtf no he’s not) then yesterday I see the same account announcing he’s gearing up to run for 2028 and suddenly it all made sense. Typical establishment bullshit but modernized for the Broligarchy takeover.
Paying for social media algorithm control like advertising so that what people get to experience is nothing social, just media pushing a wealthy agenda but tweaked to their individual feed.
Basic Glitch@lemm.eeto Reddit@lemmy.world•Is anyone else noticing an uptick in far-right content and Russian propaganda on reddit lately?English12·2 months agoI think Russian propaganda has always been there it’s just been tweaked over the years to match the audience. Reddit has exiled anyone that doesn’t support Musk, so by default the audience is mainly far-right. And it has definitely gotten out of hand to such an extreme that most of reddit is just dead internet. Bot posts filled with one liner bot comments that rarely actually engage in a discussion about anything.
I just assume any content that pushes extreme divisiveness on issues and refuses to acknowledge any sort of logic or gray area is probably due to Russian bot swarms on most major platforms.
Before I left reddit for the final time, if there was a message that was clearly being suppressed, any attempts to talk about it would be met with the most irrational wall of resistance.
Like I tried to post on a sub for federal workers back in late Jan telling people they should be refusing illegal orders being given to them. It started to get some traction, and then suddenly it was just like a swarm of very irrationally angry comments and downvotes. Like a thread could be almost completely dead, with no activity in the last several hours and I would make a comment like that and get one or two upvotes and then suddenly within a minute it would be sitting at -15 downvotes.
Idk if a community already exists for this but I feel like we need a way to teach people how to spot bot activity the same way we teach people how to spot disinformation.
He’s Trump’s science advisor, Peter Theil’s protege, and son in law of Brexit Secretary Sir David Davis. The best of the best.
