To add to this, I use an old iPad as a third monitor at work for Teams mostly. It’s 1024x768 which seems to be the minimum supported resolution for Teams (except for some applets) and I don’t need a good quality picture for Teams.

Unfortunately the app I’ve been using (TwomonUSB) seems to be no longer available for Windows download (CDN down), but this doesn’t affect me personally as I still have the setup anyway.

Seconding Startech - I bought a DP to DVI-D adapter for my MacBook Pro and while it worked flawlessly with my PC, macOS was only showing me 1280x800 resolution instead of the monitor’s full 2560x1600 resolution. I found that under Windows on Bootcamp it fully worked on the same hardware so it was clearly a macOS thing.

Emailed their support about it and within a day, got a guy who immediately gave me very technical and specific advice and suggestions, clearly very experienced. We weren’t able to solve it (chalked it up to a weird macOS limitation and work gave me a different adapter that worked) but he was still incredibly helpful, and I’ll have confidence in buying from them in the future that their support should be excellent.

Don’t know if you’ll see a lot of “no” replies, because I imagine if you’re not happy with your username, you would’ve already done something by now like a new account.

I chose my username when I was a teenager and just kept with it since. The original meaning was that I’m a nerd, with both good and bad traits. It was also chosen with aspirations of being a YouTuber in mind and having something unique.

That being said, as I’ve matured I like to think that while I am a computer nerd, there’s more to me than that single trait, so it may change in the future.

I found the same and I daily drove Windows 8.1 with OpenShell to the very end of support.

This isn’t the first time Microsoft has done this, I remember this being a huge gripe for me with Windows 8/8.1

There’s two reasons I tend to use the software button. I know for a fact that clicking “Shut Down” will actually shut down the computer. If I press the hardware button, the computer usually is configured by default to sleep. Yes, I could change this default behaviour on all the devices I use, but then there’s the second reason:

From a psychological perspective, I tend to associate the hardware button as a “only use if system is locked up” button.

From my experience, if you’re on iOS then Brave is the only browser I know of that includes a built-in adblocker (although I have my own issues with Brave).

If you’re on Android, should be able to just install Firefox (or a fork like Fennec), tap the three dots in the app > Extensions > uBlock Origin

If you’re otherwise using the YouTube app, I don’t have much to add in that respect as I usually use Invidious or NewPipe.

Only a support tech chiming in, so far I’ve found when it goes wrong, it causes errors or behaviours that are unusual and could be hard to trace back. Clients might be confused as to why their laptop isn’t connecting to some services but their co-worker still can.

I’ve currently got an infuriating issue where the DNS on my modem just dies at seemingly random intervals. I set up a monitor using Uptime Kuma to let me know when it goes down, and ever since it just hasn’t been a problem yet so I have no idea why it’s going down. I might just set up a pihole and just work around the problem.

I feel it’s worth mentioning the application of them also factors into their longevity.

Good quality SD card holding some documents and random files? Yeah probably 10+ years. Good quality SD card being used in a dashcam, constant writes? I’m replacing my good SD card after about ~2 years of service because its showing signs of failure.

Kind of, its based on the latest LTS of Ubuntu if memory serves me right

I try to avoid Ubuntu for a lot of the common reasons seen here, so a Debian based Mint suits me well

I taste the rainbow myself. Here are my PCs and their OS’s:

• HP Thin Client t520: Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC IOT with Remote Desktop to my university’s AVD instances. May downgrade to 10 IoT due to poor performance
• Gaming PC: Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC IOT 21H2
• ThinkPad T480: Windows 10 Pro, may replace with IoT in the future
• Latitude E6420: Linux Mint Debian Edition 6
• iMac 21.5" 2015: Dual boot macOS Ventura and Windows 11

My study is extremely Windows focused (expects use of Microsoft Project, everything submitted in .docx, etc.) and while it isn’t impossible to do it without Windows, I also don’t want to impede academic progress with macOS or Linux.

However, I have my Latitude which I’ve been using the most recently for all other study not requiring Windows, and my iMac I got from ewaste for doing anything needing macOS like jail breaking and syncing music to my iPhone 4s

I’ve got an older Latitude that I’ve nearly maxxed out on a shoestring budget, it runs LMDE 6 and is my dedicated Linux machine. I use it for online study, Zoom sessions, content consumption, and some Python here and there, LMDE is rock solid and hasn’t given me any fuss at all.

Unless LM22 has undergone some significant changes, I would say LMDE 6 doesn’t feel “modern” but it feels polished

Haven’t seen anyone else comment this, I mash all arrow keys

Originally I got into this habit thinking that arrow keys would do nothing, and in most interfaces they don’t, but I have learned the hard way they certainly do stuff when watching YouTube.

However it’s too late and too embedded in my brain to wake my PC by mashing arrow keys so that is my life

The whole saga with the Metro UI is sad to me too, in retrospect I like that some big player was doing something entirely different to Android and iOS.

The touch gestures and animations on Metro UI IMO still are the smoothest and nicest I’ve seen.

I feel (probably mistakenly) that if they didn’t barge the mobile UI into desktops, that it would’ve benefitted both Windows 8 and Windows Phone. Still have that flat design for the brand consistency but a more sane start menu.

Not to mention that Win8 itself (in my experience) was the best performing Windows for modern PCs, it had a lot of minor optimisations and not as much bloat as Win10. I daily drove it until the support date completely ended for it, but with OpenShell of course.
