  • It’s a really good search engine and I have no reason to doubt their claims about privacy and cencorship but I have to say no there because beside finding piratebay in the normal search results it’s all just their claims and I don’t know of any sientific study or similar that ever tested any of the claims. If you don’t trust those promises self hosting SearX is probably a good option and I haven’t tried it in years but Qwant is another one with their own index aka independent results.

  • I think that would make a lot of sense considering the different communities about similar topic on different instances, can’t replace a proper search engine but I get that that would be really expensive to host (you would have to basically index Lemmy) and that’s a nice option for official discoverability support. The biggest issue in that regard will continue be the architecture of current search engines tho, Fediverse applications can’t rank properly in a domain based system and a Reddit alternative MUST rank in search engines to be viable!

  • That sounds great, I think one of the biggest issues of Matrix is the feature packed default client, it can’t be easy with that much stuff in it and it isn’t ideal for most use cases because it tries to cover all. The official client is the one new users will try and in case of a chat app that should be a simple chat app like Whatsapp or signal, just without the extra crap!
