My cat needed to be euthanised last month, and I just received her ashes. They came with a round black sticker. What’s the purpose of this sticker?
They mentioned my chosen urn was suitable for sprinkling cremains (I don’t plan to do that) – maybe it’s related to that?
Thanks.
That’s blue
Sorry for your loss. I went through this myself today. I’m devastated.
I’m so sorry. That’s really hard. I hope you’re okay.
Guys, this happens from time to time and there’s nothing you can do about it. Sometimes, life changing events can happen in a flicker of an eye, and it might make you feel powerless, but choose instead to be humbled by it. We are not gods.Edit: I did not read OP’s post text. I thought this was about computer stickers… sorry, everyone.
Holy shit dude fuck off
What the fuck? Why the fuck did you choose to stick your very unwelcome nose into a conversation between two other people who are commiserating and comforting each other over their losses of beloved pets, to say this stupid-ass shit?
Just don’t say anything. Grief isn’t something that can be reasoned away with this nonsense. Just stop.
Oh no… jesus. It’s only now that I read the original poster’s text to their post.
I thought the first poster was making a humorous comment about the loss of their sticker, and the other one chirped in with an equally sombre note about the loss of their sticker.
I thought this was about the round stickers you sometimes get with computers. I’m such an idiot. My condolences.
I can appreciate that you understand that you made a very stupid mistake. I hope this is a learning experience for you to read the entire context before making an off the cuff remark like that. You shouldn’t be apologizing to everyone, you should apologize to the two people you who’s grief you belittled accidentally. You shocked us, you may of hurt them.
you’re right
To me it looks like a generic sticker. Does the backing of the sticker look like it was cut off of a strip of stickers? Or maybe a sheet

I could see it as being a part of some internal identification system they use. To keep track of pets, urns, or what is being worked on a particular day. Maybe which urns have been reserved and which are free to use.
What I think may have happened
-
Someone cut the stickers and left it on top of whatever they were supposed to identify, for someone else to use later
-
It was never used or needed, and fell in with the stuff that was sent to you
Best way to confirm would be to ask, I’m sure they wouldn’t mind confirming!
Sorry for your loss
You could be right. That would make sense.
Thank you!
If that answer doesn’t work for you, you can try asking in !whatisthisthing@lemmy.world.
If you stick it to something and then peel it off, does it leave a symbol? They have tamper detection stickers that leave a design when peeled off but they may not have used it on yours as it appears to be a fabric.

Try to shine strong flaslight trough it, if you’ll see traces of wire it’s a RFID/NFC sticker. Those are used for identification.
that looks like a NFC sticker I wonder if they used it for identification. I use stickers like these all the time to program devices around my home.
Is there a way I can tell? I’m pretty techy, but not familiar with that technology. It looks like a regular black sticker to me, and feels like it has a smooth finish. I tried looking that up and get nothing but sites trying to sell me nfc stickers.
Your phone should be able to detect it.
it doesn’t .
try using the app nfc tools
Then it’s not NFC, you would be able to hold it to the light and see a coil inside
Yes, it is a sticker, that doesn’t explain what it’s for
it literally explains what they’re for in the product listing:
These labels aid your warehouse operations.
• Categorize inventory, reorder points, product dating or special instructions.
• Apply these labels to pallets, boxes and shelves for easy identification.
• Easy to write on.
Yeah and that literally does nothing to explain what the context for their use is in a vet mortuary
to keep from mixing up pet ash containers
Yeah but that literally doesn’t explain why someone would care if you mixed up ashes.
/s
It’s very usefull for distinguishing it from cacao power. Won’t be making the same mistake twice. /s
What size is the sticker? All I can think is it would be used as a way to help seal the urn/container? If you got the urn from a veterinarian you could reach out to them and ask, maybe it was included accidentally?
The container had its own seal. The sticker is about an inch in diameter.
e: the seal on the container wasn’t like the sticker. It was rectangular.
e2: since my package was meant for sprinkling, I’m wondering if I’m supposed to mark the spot with this sticker? Like is that a thing one does?
Please just call and ask!
I’ll probably do that, thanks!
I think you put it on the bottom of the urn and write your pet’s name on it. I have four tiny urns on my bookcase now and labeling them has proved important.
Sorry for your loss.
I doubt this is relevant but my mind goes to the book Treasure Island
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Spot_(Treasure_Island)
The Black Spot is a literary device invented by Robert Louis Stevenson for his novel Treasure Island (serialized 1881–82, published as a book in 1883).
Could it be for the bottom of the urn to write something with marker or pen?
My condolences
Could it be to re-seal the urn?
My guess is it is an anti-tamper sticker. Once applied to a surface, removing it leaves behind a decal so that it would be obvious should the sticker be reapplied.
It removes easy and resticks.. Seems like a regular sticker.
(Very sorry about the state of my nails. I’ve been sick.)
Best guess is that it is supposed to have been used to make sure remains are not mixed up. Black sticker with the paperwork and black sticker with the remains with black sticker with the urn sort of thing.
Best answer would come from the burners, call them and find out.
Thanks.
I didn’t work directly with the crematorium, so I’ll have to track them down, but thanks!
I was wondering if this was a known thing that I just wasn’t clued into, but apparently not.
Did it leave a little bit of material behind? It could add to the tamper theory
Nope. Also I stuck it on paper and it came off cleanly. It seems to be a regular sticker.
Damn I read “my cat needed to be enthusiased and I just received her ashes” and though WTF did you do to make her so excited?
side note: enthusiased is not an english word but in greek (ενθουσιασμενος) it makes sense and it translates to “excited”
