It is not cognitive dissidence to believe positive and negative things about a company or thing. It’s call a balanced decision. It requires nuance, a key component in adult decision making. Usually children struggle with that as something is all great or all bad. Black and white thinking isn’t really fit for the adult world.

Don’t get me wrong, Unity is a solid engine. I used to use it and enjoyed the experience but resent the company and their board who are still sitting pretty. Still not held to account. If it was open source, I’d probably use it, but I simply cannot trust the company to not enshittify again in the future. When they pushed these changes through, they choose to ignore their users. I could not put myself in the situation where I’d be open to getting screwed by them again. Good luck if you are fine with that risk, but you probably should understand those that put months of work into Unity and had it taken from them (myself, fortunately it was only 4 months). I’m pretty angry about it. I resent people stealing 4 months of my life.

I do not believe in GenAI and do believe it’ll fail. I do not believe I’m guaranteed to be right. Folk seem to like confidently incorrect answers and are hooked on them. Mozilla need to diversify their revenue streams and maybe they get it right. If users expect that integration, and rivals do it, then they will perceive it as rubbish and not use it or move to it, which could be a failure.

I do not know this Steve chap, but I do know devs are asked to work on stuff and if they refuse, they’re not doing their job. In that case, you do it, or leave. He got fired and ultimately if he wasn’t running it, they even find someone else (was there anyone willing?) or can it. It got canned. No dev really chooses their workload, just how they go about it.

Closing down an instance you chose to run is malicious? If you cannot fully moderate it, it can tank your reputation. The labour cost isn’t insignificant and is not something they should be focussing on.

For the record, I disagree with the AI funding, CEO pay and pocket stuff. It doesn’t make me hate them though. They build the biggest open source alternative to Google dictating standards for web. That’s massive. I strongly dislike google for a multitude of reasons and hating a company that challenges that is a strange position to take. If Firefox goes, we’re mega fucked.

Don’t need them. Halifax has online banking in a browser. When they merged with Lloyd’s, they moved systems so I’m assuming it’s the same for Lloyd’s.

I personally would go with the previous model, and the A version. When 7 came out, I got a 6A for £299 new. Wouldn’t spend much more unless I had to.

Unreal is a top class engine. Yes, it’s proprietary and you always have to be cautious, but right now, it’s an engine that delivers top features that can build great games and isn’t run by Unity. If you win big, you need to pay, but you know that going into it.

Godot is great and improving all the time but it needs maturity.

It was a head vs heart decision and the head won this time.

But some won’t consider it. I was 2 months into a project and abandoned it. I’m now knee deep into another project in Unreal. If this doesn’t go well, it’ll be Godot, or Bevy or Armory. Unity is dead to me. It’s still the same company run by the same board and I do not trust them.

Most don’t switch as they have in house skills that would cost to retrain. The real kicker is the big studios of the future that started their projects on Godot. Those Godot games that succeed (like Cassette Beasts or Brotato) may fund the big studios of the future, and you know their leads will be Godot specialists looking for Godot devs.

Other big studios may trial Godot, but when the seed is planted, the trees take 2 to 5 years to mature.
