  • Seriously, stop using Windows. If you set up a new computer, use Linux. Compared to everything we had in the 1990’s when we all decided to buy a computer and connect to the internet, modern Linux is fucking awesome, so think of it like prestiging in Call of Duty. You go back to the 90’s and start over, but it’s not nearly as bad, and it’s for a good cause.

Family need a new computer? Linux, Mac OS. Work need services deployed? Linux, FreeBSD.

Stop using Windows. Please. I stopped in 2013 and I’ve never been happier, it’s not been easy but I’m better now because of it and when I have to see Windows I fucking cringe and wonder how people can do it.

Break your addiction to the GUI, it’s not better than CLI, it augments it. Break your addiction to download and double click .exe to install applications. Break your addition video games that require Windows, you can run anything in Steam now (sans VR 😿). Break your addiction to your OS stopping you to apply “updates” and breaking your shit and blue screen frown face and moving your start windows logo button from the far left where it’s been for decades to the middle and showing you ads and introducing spy features and forcing their browser on you and their search engine and promising you good changes and good software just to deploy a half-baked product and begging you to “just wait it’ll get better”, to have it die in your arms and have ms just walk up rip it out of your arms and replace it with more half-baked software and promises, over and over. Break your addiction to MS telling you this is the last OS that you will ever buy every fucking release, having features taken from you and placed behind a pay wall, having simple applications like notepad which might have been fine in 1993 but then just remain the same for literally 20 fucking years, just to be overhauled to have tabs, something that notepad++ (which is free) has had since the beginning. Break your addiction to the abuse, this company is buying nuclear power plants to run datacenters to process data about you, that they basically are forcing you to be okay with, so that they can further increase their profit margins, and or enable governments to survey the public for whatever reason they deem necessary.

  • This is exactly like email though.

You have a gmail account that is tied to google. You have to login to gmail to access your email but you can email anyone in the world. Some people use different providers so they have different email addresses.

If you want to change providers there is no easy way to do it. You can use imapsync or export to pst and import to new provider and so on, or maybe your new provider gives you tools for importing mail from your old mailbox but it’s not a feature of email protocol(s) to do this.

  • Be yourself, accept your family into your heart, and try to help them.

Show your racist uncle that whatever he dislikes about other races is also true for the supposed superior race, and that the things that make certain races seem inferior could be explained in other ways, like cultural issues (like racism).

Help your sister find passages in the Bible that speak to pyramid schemes, scams, gullibility, and remind her that her focus should not be on whatver these schemes are but on her Jesus and her salvation, and thank her for her service.

As much as you may hate dealing with people like this, I kinda think it’s the only way to help people. You have to build relationships with people that you dont agree with, search for good values in people and try to salvage them, pull them out of their tail spin.

My very imperfect father, whom I love and respect, has been a Trump supporter for a very long time and so any time a conversation can turn political, it does, and we all have to hear about the Democrat boogiemans and Trump the savior. As soon as it turns that way, even if I agree with his points or whatver, I just “oh shit here we go again” and what happens is, everyone in the room starts laughing because we all feel the same way. After a few of these I think he gets it, and I’ll talk with him about his ideas around Democrats and Trump, but in a curious way, and I’ll agree where we agree, and I’ll challenge him where I disagree. Sometimes we have to agree to disagree, I learn more about his perspective and we carry on.

Everyone on Earth is flawed and all we have is each other. I am so thankful for the people in my life that invested in me and I want to do the same for others.

Thank you for reading my TED talk.

  • If you’re running Proxmox in prod you need to treat it like prod. That means plan and test your changes, have contingency plans, schedule your changes, and be very precise. Try to keep your system as close to stock as possible; just leave it alone.

I’ve run a lot of infrastructure, from VMware, Hyper-V, KVM+QEMU\libvert, oVirt, and PVE, not to mention cloud infra and container orchestration. I did not want to like Proxmox when it showed up on my radar because they don’t use libvert but I tried it anyway and it has earned my respect. Their tooling and design choices are not bad and I expect them to continue to improve.

I have two HCI stacks in prod (with PBS) with a DR stack on the way, it’s been rock solid for years.

  • My point is that bad things shouldn’t prevent someone from having kids. Nobody would be alive today if other people didn’t have kids because bad things happen.

There was a time your dumb deseased mother pushed you out on a savana, maybe died in the process, and nobody on the earth gave a shit about you, and everything wanted to eat you from the ants, mosquitos, and flies, the larger predators. Everything was hostile and if you could manage not to die you still had to find a way to eat, drink, and shelter yourself from weather.

Millions of years of that, was just the beginning of how bad things could be.

Now we sit here, almost permanently sheltered, on the internet, where most peoples biggest problem is like, heart disease or rectal cancer.
