  • Think of it as someone’s private house or warehouse. Everyone is invited in to hang out and talk. At first there is a lot of freedom and no one is really affected. It becomes popular and there are many different types of people and open conversations are happening everywhere.

A new owner takes over the place.

He decides that some people shouldn’t be allowed to talk. He has a bunch of loud mouth obnoxious friends with extreme ideas and he starts giving them a louder voice. Anyone that disagrees or challenges them are drowned out, pushed to the back or told to leave. It’s become their place and their hang out now.

It’s not a public space and you really have no rights to anything there because it’s all privately owned by someone else. Write, share and save as much as you want there but none of it is really under your control or ownership.

You can shout, fight, disagree and challenge them all you want but it’s their place. You have no power there because if you put up too much of a fight, you’ll be pushed out, told to leave and never come back.

  • I’m Ojibway / Cree in Ontario just on the other side of the Great Lakes from all this. And the language and story telling is very familiar. I remember hearing this story from other Native groups Minnesota before and they always loved it because it completely turns the whole Paul Bunyan legend on its head. The language is related to mine because the place name ‘Bemidji’ means ‘a lake with crossing waters’ or something like that … it’s implying that its a location where areas of water can be crossed. It’s familiar to me to because in my language Bemichi means portaging across or to waterways.

And when it comes to Nanaboozhoo - The Greatest Ojibwe who ever lived … we call him Nanabush in our part of the country. He’s a great character because he is everything … powerful, strong, brilliant, intelligent while also feeble, humble, dumb and fallible.

Definitely a great Ojibwe … or Oochiboo as we call ourselves … for slapping Bunyan silly with a fish!

It de-legitimizes actual debate about issues with racism, homophobia, sexism, etc

When you just lump in everything that is legitimate debate along with batshit crazy stuff, then its far easier to just to dismiss it all and keep acting like a racist, homophobic, sexist ignorant jerk.

If you can’t tell what is offensive and what isn’t … it’s not a problem with the comic, it might have something more to do with you.

  • Music … learn music … learn the piano … or learn the guitar … or whatever instrument you might have used before. Music really occupies your mind because it needs a lot of mental training. You have to coordinate your body to do things, your brain has to train to follow patterns, your listening has to coordinate with what you are doing and what you produce … it’s a full brain experience and once you get accustomed to it, time seems to change … you play for an hour and it felt like you were there for five minutes but it also felt like hours passed by, it’s amazing. I’m not a great musician, I know my basics but it’s fun every time I do it.

To make it easier … leave the instrument in your living space and make it easy to pick up … park the piano in your living room where you see it every day … or a guitar on a stand next to your seat … etc

If you are not musical or want to learn music … then try visual art … drawing, painting

Just a simple pencil and paper to start with … doodling and learning forms and human anatomy … I used to do that for years when I was a teen and learned a lot but life got in the way and I got too busy to keep it up. But I have a few friends who kept it going and now produce beautiful artwork.

And it’s all about training and time. If you play music or learn to draw in a month … it probably won’t sound great or look great … give yourself a year and you’ll be producing great things … give yourself a few years and you’ll be a musician or an artist recognized by others
