The controversial part is equating “centrist” to “least biased”. Being a centrist is a political position, and like all others, it comes with its share of bias.

Beside, the “center” views depend in the country, year, and even on who you ask. A man can go from right wing to center to left without changing his stance on anything if the countries politics shift right, and the reverse is true. There were right-wing communists in the USSR, tho they were not right wing by capitalist standards.

There are objective ways to judge a news outlet: Whether they name their sources, whether they’ve been known to post updates and errata when an info they’ve posted turned out wrong, whether they’re independent, state-funded or dependent on a company, and in the two later cases, are the state or company known to make use of their influence on the news…

And the website quoted by the bot accounts for some of these… But political positioning, while worth mentioning, shouldn’t be used to calculate the reliability of an outlet. Doing so doesn’t fight bias, but just favors some bias over others.

  • There’s been scientific and philosophical debates for a long time about which cognitive traits are specific to humans and which are shared across species, and which trait is specific to each group. This is just another element to add to this debate.

If you’re wondering how this can be applied, it’s not the researcher’s job to know. A lot of the time, a discovery’s practical applications are only found decades after the discovery itself. Some are never used, but we can’t know in advance which knowledge will be useful.

So ideally, those who work in fundamental research needn’t consern themselves with the potential use of their work, they seek knowledge for itself. If there’s useful stuff in there, applied scientists and engineers will pick it up later. Ideally, but unfortunately, researchers may need to convince a patron that their research will be useful if they need private fundings, which can be a problem. Sometimes, they’ll have to put a little bullshit in their pitch for companies. But since this probably wasn’t a very expensive study, maybe public grants were enough. Or maybe they convinced some company that they could use it to promote cat antidepressants.

  • The only feature I can think of that Reddit has and Lemmy lacks is the ability to follow users… But that’s been implemented in Kbin and Mbin, and at this point I think it’s less of a missing feature and more of a choice from Lemmy; for the experience to be driven by communities of interest and avoid making a divide between big and small accounts.

There’s also the inability to post videos… Now uploading them would cause too big a strain on instances, so it’s absent for good reasons; but maybe they could be imbedded from yt or Yeertube links, so that they can be watched without exiting the webpage or client app? Tho the inconvenience is small.

I think the biggest thing to improve is integration with other fedi platforms. Following accounts may be out of the question, but it’d be cool if the whole Lemmy post could be seen from Mastodon without clicking (but maybe at that point it’s the Masto devs who must fix it?)

  • The thing is, I don’t think right wing trolls are just looking to annoy people. They’re spreading a propaganda. They want at least a part of the people who see it to believe at least a part of what they’re saying. And by repeating it a lot in many places, it can work. That’s why I think it’s also good to make a counter propaganda sometimes, not for the troll, but some who might tend to believe them. It is also true that banning them and removing their post was objectively a good thing to do, but I still wanted to post the refutation, and since this is a comic strip community it had to do a comic strip and this is one of the two ideas I could come up with (the other idea would’ve been a comic presenting the inventions in question, but it would’ve taken too much work and I wanted to post my text right now, lol).
