Politcal memes mods are deleting comments which complain about Dem support of genocide. The stated reasons are solely: “Thats ridiculous, Harris doesnt support war crimes” and reasoning like that. Its editorial modding to create and amplify their views, same as reddit does. Does this site exist for open comments or to create echo chambers? The UN and ICC have ruled that war crimes are happening and genocide is plausible, but in some places on lemmy thats dismissed out of hand and comments removed.

Mods should exist to limit abuse and enforce rules that keep this place on track, not to delete comments they personally dont agree with. Mods that abuse their power need to be removed.

Well, I imagine theres a continuum of experiences and definition differences across the industry. Similar to how “product manager” is different at each place. What I saw back in the early 2000s or so was that the SRE and the word “engineer” in general used to be handed out sparingly. An “SRE” was a sysad/devops who had the ability to commit code to fix a product instead of just opening a bug and waking an engineer. An “engineer” committed compiled code, not short scripts. But then eveyone and their cousin became “sre” whether they deserved it or not, and everyone got an “engineer” title. I’ve seen manual QA folks who were unironically called “engineers”. QA is dead now and QE is barely hanging on, and SRE seems to be dying too. Not sure whats next, maybe just overpriced cloud gui tools and thats the end of it. And SRE can go be high school comp sci teachers. And SWE can wake up and fix their own bugs and hate their lives.

Seen a lot of that too. Execs who thinks all the devs are idiots and would be lost without their genius guidance, phoned in from a luxury remote location while all of us have to return to the office full time. Then stuff fails and we “pivot” to the next badly thought out fiasco. I guess it pays the bills.

I keep seeing a pattern of sre/devops/sysadmin tasks being given back to developers and canning the SREs. Hard to understand why. Then some of the SWE get stuck basically focussing on infra SRE stuff and become unwilling SRE more or less. Circle of life? Do the old devops folks get made into glue or something?

Easiest glue: Collect chunks of conifer resin. heat over fire in a small pan. Once its liquified mix 1 part crushed common charcoal to 3 parts wet resin. You’ve got a stickey glue. You can let it harden in the pan. When you need to use it, heat the pan and it becomes wet glue again. This is how native Americans made their canoes waterproof. It does have a charming odor.

Second easiest: Collect peices of animal hide. Dried tails,ears, and tag ends are great. Legs are good. Sinew and tendon are best. You are rendering collagen so you need very low fat and no meat attached. Dont use pig, bear, racoon, squirrel or rat-- too oily. Dont use anything decayed or that has been frozen. Soak them in quicklime (kiln fire limestone peices gives you quicklime) and water for 2 weeks, skimming the top, to remove the hair and sanitize. wash with water, then lime wash again. Dry thoroughly. Cut the material into strips. Boil peices in a double boiler until they are rendered to mush. Let them dry. Control the temperature and dont let it get too hot or cold. Add water. Well prepared glue peices will absorb the water and you have a liquid glue. Failed glue wont absorb the water.

Apply the glue to the underside of the toilet.

Same story with every tech company attempting to do business inside China. Doesnt stop company after company from trying themselves because they think they are special and extra talented, not like those hacks at other companies.
