  • Depends on you and the phone.

My old lg v60 has a headphone port and sounds better than almost anything.

My last gfold 3 sounded ok with a cheap dongle but great with a rhodium off Amazon. Cheap dongle was fine too.

My current pixel fold sounds marginal with a cheap dongle but great with the rhodium.

Depends on your ears, have Shure 825s or whatever and Etymotic er4xrs for more casual stuff, the rhodium and v60 are incredible, fold can push them, the pixel again clearly isn’t tuned as well.

  • Mathematically? True random numbers cannot be.

    Electronically?

Either listening to environmental noise (human input, but mostly these things called ring oscillators that are basically chains of not gates and the initial state combined with noise, temperature and process variation).

The real magic is taking some noise source and hiding most of it (think modulo operation or similar) so people see large variations without being able to sample enough of it to find patterns, ie if the source is thermal variance, it might have a sine wave effect but you take the lowest significant bits only, and hide the biggest bits so they can’t easily model the pattern.

There’s more, lot of finite field math and transforms, whitening functions, etc.

  • Absolutely.

They partly were, they’re just not given nearly the same attention and are often terribly outdated and less engineered.

Also they aren’t tested as thoroughly, there was a call for hardware by the FreeBSD team not that long ago that I can’t find, they simply don’t have the same kind of resources.

Most FreeBSD dev is focused on server hardware like for Netflix and its ilk, I don’t know many other people who use it as a daily driver.
