flop_leash_973@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are you permanently banned off reddit? or do you just like lemmy more?2·5 days agoLemmy as a platform speaks to me on a philosophical level when it comes to the kinds of technology I use when I have the choice. I like that it is not at the mercy of the need to turn a profit to exist.

Make the jump to Linux?English13·6 days agoI left Windows ~2-3 years ago since I got tired of having to keep up with ways to disable the MS account requirements or disable the ads every time there is a major version upgrade on a platform I use every day.

Supposedly disabling battery restrictions on an app disables Doze, but in practice it doesn’t seem to make much difference.
It has been a thing off and on with Android since Doze was introduced.
flop_leash_973@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Other than a faulty charging port, is there any reason to use a wireless phone charger over wired?61·12 days agoI just like being able to walk by the nightstand and have the phone “lock” to the charging pad when I lay it down.
In my car it is a lot more convenient than a charging cradle for being able to use turn by turn while driving.

Once the shareholders are closer to the executive compensation packages than the customers/users it is all downhill. It is like clockwork.
Might take a year, might take 10, but the result is inevitable.

Same for Android, force them to spin AOSP off into a nonprofit or sell it to EFF or something and forbid them from having a huge stake in it.
Let them use it for their own products, but remove their financial influence over the underlying software.

If Apple had not been so quick to let PR write checks their ass was not ready to cash the conversation around Siri would still just be the casual jokes about it sucking, and not more serious public blackeyes.

Take some of the financial hit out of the c-suite comp package. Let those more interested in tech industry CEO money go work for the likes of Google, etc. Mozilla should be looking to attract someone whose singular motivation is not money.

I realize that is a lot easier said than done, but this kind of solution is not providing a real alternative in anything but name only. Google/Microsoft fully control the APIs being used. so this only exists so long as those they are trying to provide an alternative for allow them to exist. Which will not scale if they are anything but a blip on the radar.

Added the missing qualifier to one of the articles bullet points for them.
I have hated few things in this world as much as advertising. It is one of the few industries I feel is beyond saving and produces nothing of value at all levels. I am of the opinion that advertising is like cancer, whenever it is allowed to get a foothold somewhere it will eventually kill the host. For-profit companies can not resist the easy money promised by advertising, so the only way to combat it is not have it to begin with.
I go out of my way to pay for the things I use with money and not attention if at all possible. I will nearly always favor buying from a company that does not get most of their revenue from advertising, even if it means I pay more for the product and it is a less capable product or service.
