Reverse this for the UK, Australia, Japan, etc

I get you should look left immediately before stepping into the street as that’s where a car will be. But why twice?

I have a kid, so I needed to think this through before teaching it. I ended up teaching the kid that you would need to look everywhere at all times, but that would require having eyes everywhere, right? So you just start looking in the direction where cars could come first, and then you keep looking rightleftrightleft until you crossed the damn street

Stare into the drivers eyes as you cross…

But seriously just keep an eye on the car. Even if someone is slowing down, sometimes they don’t stop

You look twice as kids and old people aren’t very good judges of speed. Look twice to make sure u’ve not misjudged the speed of the car/bike/trunk/plane/scooter

As someone who recently got hit by a silver Honda in the middle of heavy rain. Look left as many fucking times as you can because there might be an invisible car without headlights on in the rain.

The first time because the cars will be coming from the left. The second time to make sure you didn’t misjudge the first time.

If you live in a country where the traffic directions reverse, you can teach the kid the opposite thing.

This is just a simple rule of thumb. Obviously, you don’t want anything to run into you in any directions, which is a real danger in a busy intersection.

The reason you look left again is incase there is a car approaching you didn’t see the first time because it came from behind a corner or if there was an obstruction.

Because the point is not to look, it is to double-check you did not make a mistake the first time you looked.

If you drive, please tell me you do the double-check when you’re changing lanes, despite not understanding why you would do it when crossing the road.

Check for a space, start signalling, check again.

Signalling when there is no space available should only be done when you need a car that has space to move over to know what you want to do so that they can move over to let you do it. Signalling when no one can give you the space is just asking for trouble (confusion).

Signal your intention before you take any action

Signal before action, not signal before checking that the action is possible.

Yes, but you should be sure you are able to safely take the action before signaling your intent. If you turn on your blinker before looking and there is a car next to you, that driver may be startled by your sudden blinker and the possibility that you’re about to change lanes.

pretty sure, you’re supposed to look right as you are crossing. The traffic coming from the left- in right-hand-side-driving places- are the first lanes you cross. so you look left, to see if cars are coming, look right for the same reason, then look left again, because something could have changed and stepping off immediately could be fatal if something has changed.

Then as you come to the middle, look right to check if something has changed there.

I don’t stop looking left and right while I’m crossing the street. I’m constantly scanning for threats. The road is a dangerous place.
